Mold does not always announce itself with black spots on drywall. Most of the calls a remediation company gets involve hidden growth behind cabinets, under flooring, or inside wall cavities.

1. A persistent musty smell

MVOCs (microbial volatile organic compounds) produce the classic musty odor. If a room consistently smells that way and airing it out does nothing, moisture is trapped somewhere.

2. Warped or bubbling paint

Paint that lifts off in patches, especially near baseboards or window sills, usually means the substrate behind it stayed wet.

3. Peeling wallpaper seams

Moisture pushes wallpaper edges away from the wall. Combined with a musty smell, that is almost always a mold indicator.

4. Allergy symptoms that stop when you leave the house

If your sinuses clear at work and flare up again at home, indoor air quality is worth investigating.

5. Water stains on the ceiling

One stain from a fixed leak is fine. Multiple stains, especially spreading ones, mean the material behind the drywall stayed wet long enough to support growth.

6. Discolored grout

Bathroom grout that keeps darkening after cleaning may have mold growing in the porous cement.

7. HVAC that smells worse when it runs

If your AC or furnace smells musty in the first thirty seconds of running, the coil, drain pan, or ductwork may need remediation.
